Species: Aedes cataphylla
DIAGNOSIS: Tarsal segments without dark bands. Procoxal membrane with white scales. Wing veins R2, R3, M and A mostly covered in dark scales. Some speckling of pale scales on C, Sc and R1. Abdominal segments with a basal light scaled band. Postnotum with setae only along posterior margin. Anepisternum with large areas of white scales. Membrane between tergum I and sternum I with a patch of a few white scales. Tarsal claw short and strongly curved. BIOLOGY: Overwinters in egg stage. One of the earliest mosquitoes to occur in the spring. Larvae found in snow melt pools. Rempel (1953) reports this is a rare species in the southwest corner and parklands of the province.
